Raw Feeding Diet

At Spartan Kennels our dogs enjoy a diet of RAW meat, chicken, fish and occasionally vegetables and fresh fruit. We have found a RAW diet beneficial in keeping our dogs lean and full of the energy required for performance activities.
We purchase our meat from a local butcher.

The butcher provides 2 pound packets of ground organ meats which including hearts, livers and bone for $1.00 per pound.

We generally avoid pork products and wilting produce. We do however spice meals up with blueberries (an antioxidant) and Salmon Oil.

We purchase chicken quarters from the local grocer. I generally try to find them priced below 88 cents per pound. Fresh and Easy has been an excellent source for discounted chicken quarters.

Throughout pregnancy and nursing we supplement the bitches diet with a premium kibble. She will be weaned off kibble 8 weeks after the pups are born.

The kibble we use is the exact type and brand we introduce to the puppies at 3.5 weeks.

Along with the kibble we supplement Puppy Gold. We have found this supplement to be beneficial for both growing pups and the mother. We mix the Puppy Gold with chicken broth and distilled water.

The pups will be slowly introduced to chicken necks and raw meat at 4.5 weeks.

At Spartan Kennels our experience has been that raw feeding can be just as economical as feeding a straight premium kibble. While it may require a little more time to prepare we believe the benefits of less feces, less risk of bloat, beautiful coats and eyes and lean muscle mass and prolonged energy significantly outweighs the additional preparation time. .
